A correspondent of the Mobile Tribune asks: ‘‘ "Why may not flying artillery be dispensed with and heavy ordnance be mounted on railroad cars — the guns to turn on pivots?"’--’ Again he says: ‘"Supposing there was a railroad on the margin of the coast, from Mobile to New Orleans, with cars adapted to carrying the heaviest guns on pivots, would not such land-ships be preferable to any ships on water?" ’
