A Knock-down in official quarters.
--We extract the following spicy morceau from the
Jackson correspondent of the
Vicksburg Sun:
‘
To save my gizzard, I can't keep from telling you of an altercation that took place in the executive office this morning between
Gov. Pettus and
Major E. Barksdale.
I believe they both feel ashamed of the frolic, and did not my duty as a correspondent and faithful chronicler of passing and important events compel me, I should not mention it. I will not, however, attempt to give the particulars further than to say,
Maj. Barksdale called on the
Governor, on some business connected with the sixty days requisition, in behalf of the
Quitman Rifles, of this city, who are to repair to
Columbus immediately, the
Major being one of their number.
Well, in the course of conversation, the
Governor catachreses the major concerning certain articles that appeared in the
Mississippian this last summer.
The
Major gave him to understand that he had called on official public business and protested against abusing the occasion to private personal purposes.
The Governor insisted on the propriety of his question, and let fall some remark which the
Major deemed insulting.
to which he replied with the flat instead of the voice, greatly to the dissatisfaction of the
Governor, who returned the compliment to the best of his ability.--After a few blows and sundry scratches, the dignitaries were separated, and I resume the matter will there rest.
The only good resulting from the affray is that the city treasury has been replenished to the amount of the usual fines imposed for disturbing the peace.
