Suddenly Waked up.
--Not long ago, there was published in this paper a revolutionary reminiscence, wherein allusion was made to the sufferings of Gen. Greene
's army, in the early struggle for independence, for the want of suitable clothing, which in many instances rendered the men unfit for service.
It chanced that a copy of the paper fell into the hands of a wealthy citizen of Alabama
, who had previously resisted all the appeals of patriotism to his purse.
We don't know how it happened that he put such a novel interpretation upon the revolutionary article, but after he got through he exclaimed, ‘"By Jove!
that will never do in the world!"’--So he collected together a considerable quantity of clothing and other articles requisite for the comfort of the soldier, and packing the whole securely, directed the box to ‘"General Greene of the Confederate Army,
"’ and started it off to Richmond
It arrived here in due time, and as a matter of course the depot agent was somewhat puzzled to find ‘"General Greene
,"’ but it was finally turned over to the military authorities, who distributed the contents where it was needed.
Whether the Alabamian had been asleep ever since the revolutionary war or not, we don't undertake so say; but we give him credit for doing a good thing, even though we could not help laughing when we heard the story.
