The river, that a few days since gave such convincing evidences of a rebellious spirit, and a desire to invade terra firms, nolens volens, has, to use a phrase more expressive than elegant, entirely ‘"played out"’ Shockoe creek yesterday meandered peacefully, as its wont, down to the dock, and there gave up the ghost in that placid style to which it is so much accustomed, unless brought to arrogance of spirit by the pluvial dispensations of the clerk of the weather. This latter much abused personage seems inclined to let up, instead of down, on his watery dispensations. The sun made an abortive attempt to shine yesterday, and did actually succeed, by forced smiles, in dispelling some of the gloom caused by the presence of sombre clouds above. The best evidence we have that the sun's efforts were appreciated was the presence of large numbers of the fair sex on the main avenues.
