Sketch of Edenton.

--Edenton is quite a flourishing little town of some one thousand seven hundred inhabitants. It is a post town, a port of entry, and capital or Chowan county, North Carolina, and is situated at the head of Eqenton bay, which opens into Albemarle Sound, a little below the mouth of Chowan river, one hundred and fifty miles east of Raleigh. It is one of the principal towns in the Northeastern part of the State, carries on considerable trade, and is only sixty six miles south of Norfolk, Va.

In June, 1852 one thousand six hundred and forty tons of shipping were owned and employed in the coast trade, and during that year three schooners, with an aggregate burthen of two hundred and fifteen tons, were built. Edenton was settled in 1716, and contains a splendid court-house, a jail, two churches--one Episcopal and one Methodist--an academy, and one printing office issuing a weekly newspaper.
