Spirit or the people.

--The Fayetteville Observer, of the 20th inst., says:

‘ Soon after the Roanoke Island disaster the Governor of North Carolina called for five regiments of volunteers for the war. A gentleman who left Raleigh yesterday informs us that in response to this call eighty companies have tendered themselves to the Governor within the last three weeks, of which eight or nine were offered and accepted yesterday. And there are plenty of guns now to arm them with.
