The Lincoln despotism in Fredericksburg.

The execrable conduct of the enemy in Fredericksburg is enough of itself to fire with the deepest indignation every Virginian and every Southern heart. The despot of Russia, the only Power in the world which has shown any sympathy with the Lincoln despotism, is the only ruler of modern times, except Abraham Lincoln, capable of perpetrating such tyranny. If there is a town in Virginia, or the whole South, that least of all others deserved such sufferings, it is Fredericksburg. We have never known or heard of a community more remarkable for purity of character, refinement of manners, hospitality to strangers, unostentatious piety, benevolence of disposition, and every social and every household virtue, than the people of Fredericksburg. We never visited the place without entertaining a higher opinion of human nature, without feeling better and happier in looking upon one spot where some ‘"flowerets of Eden, "’ with scarcely a trace of the ‘"trail of the serpent,"’ seemed yet to linger and to make a blooming casts in the moral desert of the world. And it is such a people who are driven from their happy homes, condemned to exile and poverty, because their consciences will not permit them to take an oath of allegiance to a hateful tyranny! Verily, the ways of Providence are hidden in mystery. Whilst such is the fate of one of the purest and best communities in modern times, the depraved and vicious cities of the North, the Sodoms and Gomorrahs of modern times, riot in case and security. In the language of Scripture, describing the wicked of a former day, ‘"they come in no trouble, like other men;"’ ‘"they flourish like a green bay tree."’ But the same inspired record directs us not to doubt the justice of God on that account, but to wait patiently, and that in the end the inevitable vengeance of God will descend upon evil doers and that their place will be seen no more. The cruelties visited upon the people of Fredericksburg, and other Southern communities, will yet be visited upon a people whose crimes have long ago provoked the wrath of heaven, and who are now capping the climax of their stupendous wickedness.
