The Northern press gives accounts which makes the blood run cold of the deliberate murder of Southern prisoners by their own troops in Missouri
There is no mistake about this.
The statements of their atrocities come from their own mouths.
They publish them themselves, boast of them, and declare that they will continue to perpetrate them in all like cases.
The crime of these unfortunate Southern citizens was the alleged shooting of some of the scoundrels, who had desolated their hearths and homes.
In one case, a man who had not committed even this offence was torn from his family, and, in spite of the tears and entreaties of his wife and children, mercilessly butchered.
And all these atrocities upon our own people are permitted to pass without retaliation!
To this day the foul murder of Mumford
remains unavenged, and by our own acts we proclaim to the Lincoln
despotism that they may do what they please with our people, without fear of retribution at our hands
