Yesterday was the, day fixed upon by both branches of the General Assembly for the election of a Confederate States Senator
, to supply the vacancy occasioned by the death of Hon. Ballard Preston
, but owing to an effort on the part of certain members to postpone the matter until some future day, the greater part of the session in the lower House was consumed in desultory speech making, calling for the eyes and noes &c. The names of Hon. William C. Rives
, Judge John J. Allan
, Hon, Charles W, Russell
, and Hon. John B. Ficyd
were finally put in nomination, but no vote was taken, and the election was postponed until to-day.
