The fence law,

passed by the last Legislature, is an important one to all classes, and should be borne in mind. It requires all stock to be kept upon the premises of their owners, and for failing to do so imposes heavy penalties. As instance, cattle found trespassing are to be taken up, advertised, and the owner to pay all damage done. For a second offence the owner has to pay double damages; and for a third offence, the party trespassed on takes possession of the stock and appropriates it to his own use. This law was passed to protect farmers and others who have no fence, aid applies to the suburbs of the city as well as to the interior of Henrico county.
