Legal opinion

--A few days since we noticed the appearance, on writ of habeas corpus, of John R. Lane, a soldier, who, since the act of Congress exempting mail contractors from military duty, has become a contractor. This writ was such out to ensure the release of Lane, who asked to be released from the army, in order that he might fulfill his contract with the Government. Judge Halyburton yesterday gave his opinion on this question, and ordered the release of Lane, thus strengthening the Post-Office Department in its effort to have its contractors put in a condition to fulfill their obligations.
