--A citizen of
Huntsville in a business letter, dated at
Chattanooga, the 17th inst., adds the following:
"I learned, at least second-hand, to-day that the enemy's cavalry, 1,000 to 1,500 strong, entered
Huntsville at 3 o'clock on Monday morning last, and that some 3,000 Federal infantry were following them; and that the
Bell factory, eight miles from
Huntsville, and sundry dwellings of citizens, had been burnt by the cavalry.
These representations are reported to have come from citizens of
Madison county, who had fled from the
Yankees on Monday.
I fear the account may be true; yet, it may be mere rumor.
I understand that it was stated, but afterwards contradicted, that the handsome residence of
Mr. John Patton, in the vicinity of
Huntsville, was burnt.
It is also reported that squads of Yankees were entering and pillaging houses; but the whole statement requires confirmation."
