Recent accounts from the Southwest show that Gen. Rains's torpedoes worked great havoc among the enemy's cavalry near Jackson. Their success was even more decided than in the experiments near Yorktown just before its evacuation. As an instrument of defence against raids, they must be highly efficient and formidable.
