Catching deserters.

--A deserter from the army named Perkins, was shot and killed a few days ago in Halifax county, Va., by a squad under command of Mr. Wm. A. Oliver, detailed from the army to catch deserters. Perkins, it appears, roosted in the woods, and found a person mean enough to carry him food every day to a certain place, where he was notified by a peculiar whistle, which brought him forth from his cave. On the day of his death the deserter hunters, getting the Q, went to the place he usually came to get his "rations," and, giving the whistle, Mr. Perkins came forth, but perceiving a stranger he ran. In his flight he was fired on and killed. Up to last Monday the squad had captured six live deserters and sent them on.
