Certificates from physicians.
--The following letter from the Surgeon General
of the Confederate States
will put a stop to a practice that has been of little benefit to the army:
Surgeon General's Office, Richmond
, Sept., 5, 1863.
--In reply to your inquiry concerning soldiers who are at a distance from their commands, &c., and their furloughs expired, I have to inform you that certificates of disability and recommendations for an extension of leaves, in these cases, given by other than medical officers,
are not, and never have been, authorized by the Regulations
and Orders from the War Department.
Your obedient servant. J. Moore
, Surg. Gen.
