The Legislature.
--In the
Senate, on Saturday, a report was received from the
Committee on Military Affairs in relation to a resolution that had been referred to it on the subject of receiving and forwarding clothing, shoes, and other supplies for
Virginia soldiers.
The Committee for Courts of Justice reported it inexpedient to legislate upon the subject of preventing by law, during the war, the killing of sheep, of calves under one year old, or pigs under six months old.
The Committee on Confederate Relations reported that it had under consideration a preamble and resolutions declaring the
status of slavery in
Virginia, and asked to be discharged from the further consideration of the subject.
The bill to suppress gaming was taken up for consideration, and finally passed by a vote of ayes 35, noes 4.
Those who voted in the negative were
Messrs. Collier,
Logan,
Marshall, and
Seldom.
The order of the day — the bill to regulate prices — was then taken up, and continued under consideration till the hour of adjournment.
In the
House, the bill to amend and re-enact an act further to provide for the public defence, passed Oct. 3, 1862, was received from the Senate, and the amendments of the
House previously adopted receded from.
Mr. Brooke, from the
Joint Committee on Salt, introduced a joint resolution, giving leave to said committee to visit the
Salt Works at
Saltville, if they deem it necessary.
Laid on the table, but subsequently taken up and agreed to.
On motion of
Mr. Haymond, the joint resolution, rescinding the resolution to adjourn on the 12th inst., was taken up and agreed to.
The bill to authorize the impressment of slaves to labor on certain lines of improvement was taken up, and pending its consideration the hour of 12 arrived, and the order of the day was announced.
The Speaker laid before the
House a lengthy communication from the
Auditing Board in relation to the action of the
House concerting the allowance of commutation of clothing to the
State forces, and explaining and defending the action of said Board.
Laid on the table and ordered to be printed.
The report of the Committee of Finance on the same subject took the same direction.
A resolution was adopted limiting debate on the
Militia bill.
The
House continued under consideration during the remainder of the day the bill to reorganize the militia.
