Sudden darkness.

--About 2 o'clock yesterday morning the gas lights in the city suddenly disappeared, leaving the streets in total darkness. On inquiry of the proper officer, yesterday morning, as to the cause, we understand that the large holder was on, and that owing to the large wheel not revolving it hung, and that before the watchman at the holders could put the other on the lights c=4 were extinguished. The other holder was not then put on, for fear of filling the stores and houses, where the lights had been extinguished, with gas, and endangering the buildings by an explosion whenever a light was taken into them. The accident was one not easily guarded against.
