The Western army.

--The following extract is from a late letter of an intelligent officer of our Western army, encamped near Dalton:

‘ "I was much shocked at our fall back from the ridge. Our men are much mortified at their conduct, and long for an opportunity to regain the reputation won on so many bloody fields before, but lost on this. * * * The army is in good trim, increasing by the return of stragglers, &c.--"Tis a gloomy country, and entirely exhausted. We are yet meat and bread, thank God."
