Even the Government
officers are deceived by misrepresentations, and the Government
made to assist its enemies.
Within a few months past large numbers of able bodied men have fled from the South
to escape military duty, leaving their families to follow when an opportunity offers.
Some of these families are said to be obtaining employment by representing their husbands to be in the Southern
army, thus taking from true Southern ladies the work they could perform and the bread they could earn.
It is impossible for the Government
agents to know all the loyal needy, and of consequence they have to submit to impositions; but our citizens, by reporting impostors to the proper authorities, could prevent very many impositions, and at the same time materially assist the truly deserving.
