Impositions

are practiced on all charitable associations, however guarded the agents may be, In the efforts made to relieve the needy, bad persons are often benefited to the injury of the deserving. Even the Government officers are deceived by misrepresentations, and the Government made to assist its enemies. Within a few months past large numbers of able bodied men have fled from the South to escape military duty, leaving their families to follow when an opportunity offers. Some of these families are said to be obtaining employment by representing their husbands to be in the Southern army, thus taking from true Southern ladies the work they could perform and the bread they could earn. It is impossible for the Government agents to know all the loyal needy, and of consequence they have to submit to impositions; but our citizens, by reporting impostors to the proper authorities, could prevent very many impositions, and at the same time materially assist the truly deserving.
