A Substitute's principal shot by a soldier.

--A man named J. T. B. Weatherford was shot yesterday morning, while on his way from Petersburg to this city, by Frank Gilday, a member of the 15th Virginia regiment. It seems that Weatherford was one of that class who has been affected by the recent action of Congress with regard to substitutes. He was in the custody of Gilday, and as the train reached Rice's Turnout he undertook to walk off without permission from the guard to do so. Failing to stop, after being hailed three times, the soldier having him in charge pulled trigger and brought him to the ground. Weatherford's wounds are supposed to be mortal.--Under military rule any guard is justified in shooting an escaping prisoner if he refuses to halt after being hailed in the usual manner.
