Ordinary licenses.

--During the year 1863 one hundred and fifty two licenses to keep ordinaries were granted by the Hustings Court. Of this large number scarcely a dozen conform, in the slightest degree, to the requirements of the statute relative to the proper conduct of houses of entertainment. It would seem that any one, fortunate enough to have a friend willing to vouch that he would probably keep a house, orderly, useful, and such as the law requires, has been licensed to deal liquid poison to an unlimited extent.
