A Singular theft.

--On Saturday evening last an infant, about twelve months old, was found lying on Main street, near the bridge which crosses Shockoe creek, and kindly taken into the family of a Mr. Taylor, living in the neighborhood, where it was cared for till yesterday morning, when a lady, one of the nurse at the small pox hospital, called upon them and claimed it as her own. She stated that while she was waiting upon some patients a soldier entered her apartment and took from its cradle the little urchin. Doubtless the fellow had gone there to steal something more useful, if not more valuable; but, failing of success, and not caring to leave empty handed, he, therefore, pitched upon the baby as the most profitable article he could carry off.
