Casts of the Crania of the Chippewa Indiana.

--Soon after the arrival of the Chippewa Chiefs in Washington, Surgeon Macgowan, United States army, addressed a communication to Mr. Dole, Commissioner of indian Affairs, in behalf of the American Demographical Society, begging that Mr. Clarke Mills might be employed to take casts and model some busts of the aboriginal visitors. Mr. Dole acceded to the request, and on Wednesday the operation commenced in Mr. Mills's studio, in the Capitol. On measuring the heads of these Indiana, Dr. Macgowan found them to be of greater average size than those of the "Longswords," as they style Americans. For example, the lugest east in the collection was that of Mr. Chase, but the first Indian whose cast was taken, "Bad Boy" by name, showed a head larger a whole inch, in every direction, than the massive one which presides over the Treasury. Dr. Macgowan urges on the Department the importance of forming a national gallery of Indian heads, which will form a cheap, durable, and perfect contribution to the history of a race which posterity will be anxious to study.-- Washington Chronicles.
