Cheering news from the Shenandoah Valley--Sigel's column defeated with heavy loss.

[official Dispatch.]

New Market, May 16--7 A. M.

To Gen. S. Cooper:
This morning, two miles above New Market, my command met the enemy, under Gen. Sigel, advancing up the Valley, and defeated him with heavy loss.

The action has just closed at Shenandoah river. The enemy fled across the north fork of the Shenandoah, burning the bridge behind him.

Jno. C. Breckinridge,
Major General Commanding.
