has granted a further respite in the case of William, slave of Samuel Fauntleroy
, who was to have been hung yesterday morning for the crime of burglary, committed at the dwelling of Mrs. Mary Harris
, on Grace street, between Eighteenth and Nineteenth--the negro and an accomplice entering the house armed with a loaded gun, a knife and a sword, ready to murder if it had been necessary to the accomplishment of their purpose.
The message from the Governor
was not received by the City Sergeant
till a few minutes before it was time for the condemned man to be taken from the jail and after the preacher had united with him in prayer for the salvation of his soul.
The execution has been deferred till the 21st of October, at which time another negro named Ben, slave of John H. Gentry
, convicted or breaking into and robbing James T. Butler
& Co.'s store, is also to be hung.
As at present contemplated, they will then be both hung together.
