It is announced with great satisfaction by the English journalists that Queen Victoria will formally emerge from her long seclusion since the death of Prince Albert on the occasion of the opening of the new Parliament, next month. The Queen, once so popular, has suffered of late a great decline in the enthusiastic favor which once heralded with delight her most insignificant movement. It is not that she was no longer the model matron of the British isles that she ceased to be the national idol. On the contrary, the cause of complaint is that she has suffered the sorrows of widowhood to make her forgetful of the duties of a Queen. It is not the neglect of official responsibilities which is charged to her account. She has not omitted the performance of one duty appertaining to her royal position, and it is stated that she has given even more of her time and attention to the dispatches and appointments submitted by her Ministers for her approval than during the lifetime of her husband. As a mother, she has educated her children to be an honor to her nation and her name. The just cause of complaint is the decay into which court ceremonials and festivities have fallen of late years. The London shop-keeping interest, the cockney retailers of the gewgaws and flummeries of the fashionable world, have been thrown into despair. Now that the Queen has been forced by their incessant complaints to sacrifice her preference of retirement, and to yield a privilege which is performed by her humblest subjects, the welkin rings with rapture. She is once more the best of Queens, the paragon of ladies, the model mother of her people. That which constitutes the model mother being not to train her own offspring in the way they should go, but to hold the baby Bull in her lap, and feed him with a silver spoon till his eyes stick out of his head with fatness. We have been taught by British journalists to believe that America is the only land in which the dollar reigns supreme. We are obliged to yield the palm to England, which converts its sovereign into a golden calf, and falls down and worships.
