So they were not grateful to those who
had served them well? Yes, men of Athens, they were very grateful; they showed their gratitude in
a manner that was equally creditable to themselves and the recipients. They were
all men of merit, but they chose those men to lead them; and to men of sobriety,
who have a keen eye for realities, being raised to the primacy of a brave and
noble people is a far greater distinction than any effigy of bronze.
