merrythought cup

A cup whose bowl has no offset lip, but is shaped like a segment of a sphere. The foot is much taller and more slender than that on the Siana cup.

History: The Merrythought cup is contemporary with the far more popular Siana cup. The senior Siana cup artist, the C Painter also decorates the Merrythought cups, which are the first of the Athenian cups without an offset lip.

Term: The Merrythought cup is so called in modern times from the form of the handles, which recall a "merrythought" (British English for "wishbone").
