ASSOS (“Asai”) Corinthia, Greece.

Theopompos (apud Steph. Byz., s.v. Ἀσαί) recorded that Asai and Mausos were large and populous towns. The ancient name of the former may be reflected in the name of the modern town of Assos on the Corinthian Gulf not far W of Corinth. A large ancient site, occupied at least from the 6th c. B.C. to the 5th-6th c. A.D., which is located ca. one km S of Assos near a Church of Haghios Charalambos. A Roman bath was excavated there in the 1950s and extensive remains of walls of houses and larger buildings as well as poros sarcophagi can be seen in the vicinity.
