BREST (“Gesocribate”) Finistère, France.

Ancient site probably to be identified as the Gesocribate of the Peutinger Table. Only a few traces of the Gallo-Roman period have been found in the substratum of the city. Brest's maritime position and its consequent vulnerability to the raids of the Saxons led to the erection of a series of fortifications at the end of the 3d c. A.D. On the left bank of the Penfeld, the isthmus is blocked by a strong wall, built with a core of mortared rubble faced with small blocks and banded with brick. Part of the present-day castle is supported by this wall.
