CAIETA (Gaeta) Latium, Italy.

A port included in the territory of Formiae in Roman times, made by Vergil the site of the death of Aeneas' nurse (Aen. 7.1-7). Livy (40.2.4) mentions a temple of Apollo there, Cicero's estate seems to have been there (Att. 1.3.2. and 4.3), and there are allusions to an imperial villa. The most conspicuous remains today are the monumental tombs of L. Munatius Plancus and L. Sempronius Atratinus, both of the general type of the mausoleum of Augustus.
