CAVALLINO Apulia, Italy.

An ancient Messapian center ca. 6 km S of Lecce. Some have identified it with the famous Salentini site of Sybaris recorded by Pausanias (6.19.9). The remains of a great circuit wall are preserved, in which several gates have been noted. Recent excavations have brought to light, besides traces of a protohistoric settlement, conspicuous ruins of habitations and rich pit tombs, datable between the 6th and the beginning of the 3d c. B.C.
