CAWTHORN Yorkshire, England.

Contiguous Roman forts 9.6 km NW of Pickering on the escarpment of the limestone hills overlooking the N Yorkshire Moors.

The ramparts are of turf and upcast from the ditches. There are traces of metaled roads within the ramparts. In one fort an oven was found near the gate, but not the full range of ovens necessary for a field kitchen. Moreover, there were a few pits near the ramparts but no broken pottery, so the forts were probably built for practice purposes and never occupied. Though often described as camps they are rather too large and possess features such as claviculne at the entrances, so they are better described as forts.
