CHAVAGNÉ Deux-Sèvres, France.

The ancient site called La Fougeoire is in the civitas of the Pictones. It was on the highway leading from Poitiers to the Sinus Pictonum, as was the sanctuary of Sanxay (Vienne). Aerial reconnaissance has revealed a vast ensemble, covering several ha, of architectural remains, trenches, and circles.

A main building, oriented N-S, the nature of which is uncertain (villa?), was worked on in two different periods, the beginning of the 1st c. and the Flavian period, when it seems to have been remodeled and enlarged. Occupation of the site goes back to Iron Age III.2 and lasted until the 3d c. A.D. Objects of Celtish design, a mold, and bronze decorations, indicate that the pre-Roman tradition long survived here.
