COLONIA
(Şebinkarahisar, Giresun) Armenia Minor,
Turkey.
Colonia was, according to Procopius,
founded by Pompey but this may be a confusion with
Nikopolis. The name Colonia at least must depend on the
placement of veterans perhaps from the legion at Satala.
It reaches more prominence in the Early Byzantine period
and is referred to as a city by Basil. It was heavily
fortified by Justinian (Procop.,
Buildings 3.4.6). Byzantine defenses are visible today. Inscriptions have been found.
