MENDENITSA (“Pharygai”) Boiotia, Greece.

The site of the mediaeval fortress of Boudonitsa, which incorporated elements of Hellenic construction, including a massive gateway. The remains have been identified by some as those of ancient Pharygai, a town traditionally founded by Argives who brought with them the worship of Hera Pharygaia. Philippson disagreed on the grounds that Pharygai is not known to have been an important Greek fortress as these ruins would suggest. Naryka, also suggested for this site, is now thought to be at Rengini.
