PIANO DEL CASAZZI
Sicily.
This small site
lies ca. 16 km N of Caltagirone, in the arid hills overlooking the valley of Katane. It occupies a hilltop that
was fortified with a wall and square towers; extensive
traces of these remain. An adjacent Sikel necropolis with
chamber tombs has been despoiled, but to be associated
with this early habitation is a major bronze hoard, found
nearby at San Cataldo and dated to the Finocchito period
(730-650 B.C.). The Greek fortifications have been attributed to Hippokrates of Gela (ca. 495 B.C.), but without further excavation this suggestion must remain tentative.
