SIGNIA (Segni) Latium, Italy.

According to tradition Segni was founded by Tarquinius Superbus and recolonized by the Romans in 494 B.C. Strategically located on Monte Lepino with only one means of access, it became one of the best fortified towns in Italy with two, and in some places three, lines of walls, begun in the 5th c. B.C. The Porta Saracena is notable for its ogival arch. On the acropolis stood a temple built in the early 5th c. and repaired after the social wars. Terracotta finds extend from the archaic period through the Sullan period.
