VERNEMETUM
(Willoughby) Leicestershire, England.
The
Antonine Itinerary (Iter VI and Iter VIII) indicates that Vernemetum lay 13 Roman miles N of Ratae Coritanorum (Leicester) on the Fosse Way.
Its position has been ascertained by excavation in 1947
and 1964-68, but little is known of the settlement. It
seems to have been a humble one with simple buildings
and no defenses. The Roman name implies the existence
of a temple or other sacred site, but of this there is no
recorded trace.
