ἄγοιτ᾽ ἄν, an entreaty: cp. O. C. 725. The opt. with “ἄν” had a different tone in 444.

μάταιον here expresses rash folly: cp. O. T. 891ματᾴζων”: Tr. 565ματαίαις χερσί”.
