ῥαχίζων, here in a general sense, ‘hewing down’; properly, to cut through the spine (“ῥάχις”), to cleave in twain; cp. 299: Aesch. Pers. 426“ἔπαιον, ἐρράχιζον”. κἀδόκει μὲν κ.τ.λ.: properly, “κἀδόκει ἔστι μὲν ὅτε..., ἔστι δὲ ὅτε”: but “μὲν” is misplaced (as in Ph. 279“ὁρῶντα μὲν ναῦς”, and ib. 1136 “ὁρῶν μὲν ἀπάτας”); and “ἔστι δὲ” is omitted. Cp. O. T. 603“τοῦτο μέν”, balanced in 605 by “τοῦτ᾽ ἄλλο”.
