μεγαλοπρεπείην. Just as H. thinks the greatest of Greek temples those of Ephesus and Samos, so here he holds Polycrates to have been more magnificent than Pisistratus; the comparison is significant.

ἀποκτείνας. H., like a true Greek, gives here no details of Asiatic barbarity; he is less reticent in iv. 202.

Σάμιοι. Oroetes hoped to form a Persian party in Samos; cf. Thuc. i. 55, iii. 70 for a similar policy at Corinth towards Corcyra.
