τῶν Ἀθηναίων. Dobree should not have struck this out. It draws attention to the Athenian side as opposed to Tissaphernes and his relations with the Peloponnesians. κεφαλαιοῦντες ἐκ πολλῶν Cf. vi. 91, πολλὰ παρεὶς τὰ μέγιστα κεφαλαιώσω.
Εὐμολπιδῶν, the priestly clan which provided the hierophants of the Eleusinian mysteries, and the ἐξηγηταὶ of laws touching ἀσέβεια. They had some (though rather indefinite) judicial powers in cases of impiety, Dem. Androt. 601, Lys. 104 (10). The Κήρυκες were the other great priestly house, who actually slew the victims (Athen. xiv. 79), and are generally mentioned in association with the Eumolpidae (e.g. Pausan. i. 38). περὶ τῶν μυστικῶν Alcibiades had been charged with taking part in the mutilation of the Hermae, and with caricaturing the mysteries at a carousal. Plut. Alc. 19, ἔλεγον δὲ Θεόδωρον μέν τινα δρᾶν τὰ τοῦ κήρυκος, Πουλυτίωνα δὲ τὰ τοῦ δᾳδούχου, τὰ δὲ τοῦ ἱεροφάντου τὸν Ἀλκιβιάδην. Alcibiades was therefore charged with τὸ ἀσεβεῖν περὶ τὼ θεώ. The actual terms of the εἰσαγγελία are given in Plut. Alc 22, ending with παρὰ τὰ νόμιμα καὶ τὰ καθεστηκότα ὑπό τε Εὐμολπιδῶν καὶ Κηρύκων καὶ τῶν ἱερέων τῶν ἐξ Ἐλευσῖνος. μαρτυρομένων καὶ ἐπιθειαζόντων per deos obtestantibus. Cf. ii. 75, τοσαῦτα ἐπιθειάσας. μὴ κατάγειν depends on the combined sense of the participles, which are words of dissuading. παρελθὼν sc. ἐπὶ τὸ βῆμα. πρὸς . . . σχετλιασμὸν ‘in the face of much indignant complaint.’ παράγων ‘producens in medium,’ P-S. The causative of παρελθεῖν: cf. παράγειν ἐς μέσον, Hdt. iii. 129. Used of a witness, Dem. 285 (170). Cf. iii. 68, ἕνα ἕκαστον παραγαγόντες καὶ ἐρωτῶντες . . . ὁπότε μὴ φαῖεν κ.τ.λ.; v. 46, etc. οὐκ ἐλάσσους Cf. πλέοσι ναυσὶ, c. 52. ἀντιπρῴρους ‘facing them,’ i.e. in a condition and spirit ready for action.
ὁπότε . . . μὴ, see c. 38, § 5, ἐπεὶ δὲ μὴ ἀντανάγοιεν. ἐνταῦθα ἤδη In view of the following σαφῶς and the sense generally, this is somewhat better than δὴ. He had not ventured to speak clearly before, but only to hint at some change. Now (iam) he dares to go so far as to openly propose oligarchy. Cf. iv. 35, ὡς δὲ ένέδοσαν, ἐνταῦθα ἤδη κ.τ.λ. Inf. c. 67, § 3, ἐνταῦθα δὴ λαμπρῶς ἐλέγετο ἤδη, shows that δὴ in itself was not felt to be strong in this sense. τοῦτο the desired alliance. εἰ μὴ πολιτεύσομέν τε answered by Ἀλκιβιάδην τε κατάξομεν, the intervening καὶ . . . ποήσομεν καὶ μὴ βουλεύσομεν being parts of the former line of policy. Says Peisander, ‘we must form a wiser government, and we must bring back Alcibiades.’ The former item he explains or expands by the clauses with καὶ. Thus εἰ μὴ (1) πολιτεύσομέν τε . . . καὶ . . . ποήσομεν . . . καὶ μὴ-βουλεύσομεν . . . (2) Ἀλκ. τε κατάξομεν. σωφρονέστερον connoting oligarchy. Cf. c. 64, § 5; iii. 82, etc. ἐς ὀλίγους ποήσομεν Cf. c. 38, § 3, τῆς πόλεως ἐς ὀλίγον κατεχομένης; ii. 37, διὰ τὸ μὴ ἐς ὀλίγους οἰκεῖν; v. 81, τὰ ἐν Σικυῶνι ἐς ὀλίγους μᾶλλον κατέστησαν. μὴ τὸ πλέον περὶ . . . ἢ περὶ ‘not so much about . . . as about . . .’
