φράξαντες, stopping up the gaps where the battlements had been broken down. ῥινοῖσι βοῶν is generally taken to mean with shields, but in this sense “ῥινός” alone is the usual phrase (4.447, 8.61), and the addition of βοῶν perhaps indicates that they had whole hides ready at hand for the purpose of temporarily stopping breaches; a simple and effective device.
