δήμωι, ‘realm’ in local sense, see 2.547. περ: the idea seems to be, ‘poor though the soil of Ithaka be, yet it has succeeded in producing a great man.’ Cf. Od. 4.605, Od. 9.27 “τρηχεῖ᾽ ἀλλ᾽ ἀγαθὴ κουροτρόφος.” τράφη, read “τράφεν” or “τράφ᾽ ἐνί”, though here the MSS. are unanimous; see on 2.661.
