ἐπιβαλλόμενος, throwing himself upon the spoil, half in a physical, half in a metaphorical sense. For the gen. Ameis compares Od. 22.310 “Ὀδυσῆος ἐπεσσύμενος”. The word occurs in later Greek, e.g. Aristot. Pol. i. 9. 16 “τοῦ εὖ ζῆν ἐπιβ.”, with the purely mental sense ‘desire eagerly’; like 1.173 “ἐπέσσυται”. Cf. the use of “ἐφίεμαι”, desire.
