2. as pr. n., Ἑσπερίδες, αἱ, the Hesperides, daughters of Night, who dwelt in an island, on the western verge of the world, and guarded a garden with golden apples, Hes.Th.215, E.Hipp.742 (lyr.), D.S.4.27, etc.: hence “Ἑσπερίδων μῆλα” quinces, Pamphil. ap. Ath.2.82d.
