A.of or called after Io, epith. of the sea between Epirus and Italy, at the mouth of the Adriatic sea, across which Io swam, “πόντιος μυχὸς . . Ἰόνιος κεκλήσεται, τῆς σῆς πορείας μνῆμαA.Pr. 840; another expl. in Theopomp.Hist.125; “. κόλποςHdt.6.127, Th.1.24; θάλασσα, πόρος, Pi.P.3.68, N.4.53; also simply “ ἸόνιοςTh. 6.30; later “Ἰόνιον πέλαγοςAP6.251 (Phil.).
