Εὐμεν-ής , ές, (μένος)
A.well-disposed, kindly, τινι to one, epith. of gods, h.Hom. 22.7 (not in Il. or Od.), Pi.P.2.25, A.Supp.686 (lyr.), cf. X.HG6.4.2; “ἵλεως καὶ εὐ.Id.Cyr.1.6.2, Theoc.5.18; “ἙρμῆςIGRom.1.1228 (Egypt, ii A. D.); “τὸ τῶν θεῶν εὐ.D.4.45.
2. of men, A. Pers.175 (troch.), Supp.488 (Comp.); “πόλειS.Ant.212, etc.; εὐ. πρός τι well-disposed for it, Plu.Luc.42; τὸ εὐ., = εὐμένεια, Pl.Lg.792e; “ξεῖνος δὲ ξείνψ . . -έστατον πάντωνHdt.7.237: in Dor. Prose, Schwyzer 84 (Argos, v B. C.).
3. of actions, etc., εὐμενεῖ τύχα, νόῳ, Pi.O.14.15, P.8.18; εὐ. ὀλολυγμός signifying goodwill, friendly, A.Th. 268.
4. of places and things, γῆ εὐ. ἐναγωνίσασθαι favourable to fight in, Th.2.74; εὐμενεῖ ποτῷ (of a river) kindly, bounteous, A. Pers.487; of the air, mild, soft, Thphr.CP2.1.6; so of medicines, beneficial, “ὑποχονδρίψ καὶ σπλάγχνοισινHp.Acut.59, cf.Aret.CA1.3; but also, agreeable, [“κόμμι]-έστερον κόλληςHp.Art.33; of a road, easy, X.An.4.6.12 (Comp.).
