Χῖος , α, ον, (contr. from Χίιος)
A.of or from Chios, Χῖαι [κρηπῖδες] Hp.Art.62, cf. Aristomen.11, etc.; “σύκιναPCair.Zen.33.12 (iii B. C.); Χ. ἀοιδός, i. e. Homer, Theoc.7.47; “χ. ἄνθρωποςD.35.52: prov., Χῖος δεσπότην ὠνήσατο 'caught a Tartar', Eup.269.
b. esp. “οἶνος Χ.Ar.Ec.1139: freq. without οἶνος, Id.Fr.216.3, etc.; “ἐν ἀκρήτῳ ΧίῳAP7.422 (Leon.).
2. as Subst., Χῖοι or οἱ Χῖοι the Chians; without Art., Hdt.1.142, Th.1.19, 3.32, etc.; with Art., Id.8.15,22, etc.
II. Χῖος (sc. βόλος), = κύων v1, the worst throw of the dice (cf. χιάς), i. e. the external face of the ἀστράγαλος (Ruf.Oss. 38), with the ace-dot, opp. Κῷος (q. v.), “Χῖος παραστὰς Κῷον οὐκ ἐᾷ λέγεινStratt.23, cf. Arist.Cael.292a29, AP7.422 (Leon.), Poll. 7.204, 205, Zen.4.74: hence prov., Χῖος πρὸς Κῷον ibid. (in Arist. HA499b29 χῖα is cj. for ἰσχία, κῷα for κῶλα).
